POV: How the Benzo Crisis Was Solved #satire #mentalhealth #psychiatry #benzodiazepines
Переглядів 1,1 тис.15 годин тому
In my journey through psychiatry training, I've noticed a troubling pattern: a reluctance to prescribe controlled medications and a stigma around benzodiazepines. This attitude has left patients feeling marginalized and struggling to access their essential medications. As a telepsychiatrist, I've seen firsthand the challenges patients face, from abrupt medication cuts to protracted withdrawal. ...

I feel it in my chest too. I haven't had a SINGLE day off from it in 16 months. The weird part is sleeping habits. They seem to correlate exactly, if i can't sleep i feel it on my legs, neck and chest. If i sleep good and exercise, just my chest and neck. The front of my neck... it was burning at first during the actual withdrawals. It's getting better.. I've lost everything though including respect from friends. I was LOST for a year. 17 years prescribed valiums 40 mg a day. I'm in month 16. I'd like to share my story at some point. People will judge.. ignorance is bliss.

I had a great psychiatrist once who was very wise and insightful. She did not act as my therapist but when I saw her she was very helpful. She wasn't fond of meds but did prescribe them. Later on I met another psychiatrist who when I asked if she could help me find a therapist said she would also be my therapist. I knew that wasn't right and I should have ran right away. She did more harm.

I went to a 10 day detox in FL to get off of 20 mg. of diazepam. It’s been 3 1/2 months and I have been to the ER 4 times for withdrawal problems. This has truly been some of the darkest days of my life. I wish I known.

I ran out of xanax early last month and had bad withdrawal symptoms that put me in the ER. I was able to refill my script the following morning and started taking it again. Ever since that day my xanax doesnt work like it used to. Would this still be considered "kindling?"

I made a study of psychiatric pharmacology a while back (lifelong special interests in psychology and medicine met the dearly departed love of my life who was on 7 psychiatric medications when we met! 😳), and these were my conclusions: 1) Taking more than two meds for pretty much ANY condition is going to end up producing more negative effects than it resolves. 2) Benzodiazepines have a time and place. Most of those times and places are for one day under direct medical supervision. Exceptions include emergency epilepsy treatment and a few rarely used pills for unusual circumstances (i.e. a plane flight or visit to the dentist which happens once or twice a year, or panic attacks less than once per month). Taken more often than about one day per month, they produce an addiction whose only redeeming value is it forces the patient back into the doctor’s office as often as the doctor chooses. 😬 3) Antidepressants all inhibit the reuptake of some amount of serotonin and norepinephrine. Antipsychotics also inhibit the reuptake of dopamine. That’s it. That’s all almost all of them do. The variation in effects between them is pretty minor. 4) Lithium is an exception. We really don’t know how it works, but it seems to do a good job of keeping people from attempting to self-end, and as it has been around for 150 years or so, to one extent or another (in its current use for over 50), we know what the bad effects are and how to minimize them. It should probably be prescribed more often. 5) Stimulants for ADHD are a whole separate category. Everything else; anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia; tends to bleed into eachother and produce fuzzy diagnoses with similarly vague treatments, but ADHD and stimulants are distinct. Still, a stimulant for ADHD should be considered part of psychiatric drug burden. 6) Prozac and Valium have very long half-lives and are therefore useful for tapering off antidepressants and benzodiazepines, respectively. Stopping ANY psychiatric medication should be done as slowly and carefully as practically possible; these things can hit you hard coming AND going! 🤕 Bonus fact: Clomipramine is the gold standard of treatment for OCD, and should definitely be prescribed more often specifically for that condition. High doses are often required. 🤓

Thankfully, I found out about this man & his clinics. I wish I lived in a country which had them, but a good friend in the withdrawal community bought Mark’s book for me! Thankfully! I’m trying my best to promote it & friends have asked about it! I’ve tried getting it into some of our libraries. I got a “not likely” from 1 and a “try again in a few months” from the other. I’m so grateful beyond words for this man & all he’s done for so many & for those in the years to come! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

It’s like having dementia, but, hopefully, you know it’s temporary...can’t find your right words, so you try to come close to what words are available to you in your memory, though you know you’ve got the wrong word. Can’t read or comprehend a sentence for months, etc... I’m absolutely amazed he’s doing this well in such a short time! I’m so glad he’s doing so much better! I could never tell he’s been through that hell! He deserves a Purple Heart & compensation of some sort! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

That's the typical ad hominem. Straw man nonsense. My last 'therapist' saw me as a liability and refused to see me AFTER taking me off valiums I took for 17 years. I'm serious. My life has been ruined. 16 months now I'm trying to get it back. I have 2 sons who watched me fall. It's FUC^%&% UP.

It’s too bad he didn’t have a copy of Dr. Heather Aston’s book. He’d have saved himself some of these problems. But sometimes we don’t find these things till later. (He really looks very well, for all he’s been through, but people say the same to me.) I know another person who had an attorney but lost twice! Taken off too fast by MDs & now she can’t work. Horrible!

This is slight information though. Why would someone who used for a short duration have to do a long drawn out taper? This is a scare tactic video for him to boost his business. I don't dismiss withdrawals, especially for people who have used for a very long term and changed their brain chemistry, but he doesn't mention anything about amounts or duration of use. How heartbreaking for these individuals. They are the most vulnerable among us, and some of them can do considerable harm to others, especially their younger siblings, spouses/partners, and no one more than the children they have. This is a social issue that is rarely, if ever, addressed sufficiently. Those fortunate enough to be born into wealth are often the only ones who get the care they need. The US is such a morally bankrupt, capitalist society where profit comes first and healthcare has become a term to gaslight the public into continue paying their insurance premiums or risk total and complete bankruptcy.

In Huron County in Michigan, there was only Psychiatrist in the county and she had a 70plus a day to get into the county. She was responsible for the all agencies in the county. At Huron Behavioral Health no therapy given and she would medicate her patients and refuse to listen to anything they say. She even threw a potent anti psychotic at me even though I was not a person experiencing psychotic episodes. I had my B.S. in psychology and M.A in Measurement at the time and she refused to take into account what I knew was true and accurate. She prescribed SSRI when I expressed struggles while I was living in a county that had no jobs and no transportation. The legal system and insurance companies are bedmates with psychiatric/medical model of mental disorders that common sense and patience is devalued. Sir, I am pleased to see someone who is speaking out and the overall use of medication.

Not necessarily. And GPs are more likely to listen to you and understand, even empathise, because psychiatrists look down on you like you are a different species, they cannot empathise, they have complexes so if you challenge them they exercise power on you or gaslight you or use it against you in some way. They can be inhumane and can drive a thoughtful sane person insane. Plus they are brainwashed by their training, their peers and the drug companies. For real therapy, a good psychologist or good therapist is of course better than a GP.
